A Personal Message from Emma Hartnell-Baker
- 'Read Australia' Web Site Creator.

Without Prejudice

As regular site visitors will know, I have included a great deal of free information on the Read Australia
web site for the past two years, promoting and supporting this method with no financial gain,
even before I undertook the Phono-Graphix certification course which states

Online Certification Course- Phono-Graphix

I linked to the Read America site- sending many site visitors to the site for
information and recommending that they undertake the online
certification course themselves.
I had listed my own services as a therapist on the Read America web site, and
believed this Certification enabled me to list related services on my own site.
I had placed links to Amazon so that site visitors could order books relating to Phono-Graphix,
as well as other teaching methods. I had included pages of free information supporting this method,
including this one.

I was enthusiastic about introducing this method to parents and teachers
across Australia and had already started to plan workshops and training.
My original interest in this method stemmed from reading 'Why Children Can't Read and What We
Can Do About It
' by Diane McGuiness and reading of her research.

The courses I was planning would not only cover the PG method, but also incorporate
information about Diane's work - and explore how learning styles, and other issues that affect literacy
success - eg emotional and behavioural difficulties and specific learning difficulties.
I had also planned to offer free workshops and training to target those most in need.
I had a wide range of ideas, based around around my personal observations and finding and including
information gained within a Masters Degree in Special Needs. As the The Child Listener I have many years experience working with disaffected teenagers, and children with emotional and behavioural difficulties
- most of whom also fail to learn to read and spell with any competance or confidence. I was also aware of how much work needed to take place with the parents themselves- so that they could help their own children
(rather than having to find the financial resources to pay for ongoing tuition)

I wrote to Carmen McGuiness to discuss my suggestions about possible
workshops, short courses and in-service training, to cater
for the individual needs of the schools and organisations I work with.
Many of whom do not wish to undertake the certification course, or who simply cannot afford it.

Many of the parents I work with need help and guidance using Reading Reflex with their children.
Many of the parents I work with live in low socio-econimic areas, and/ or have had personal
difficulties with regards to literacy.
They lack confidence within this area- and to help their children I have had to first help them.
I had been doing this, without charge, from some time. I had wanted to deliver more formal workshops
-specifically covering how to use the book.
I do not believe that this is a self-explanatory stand alone book- for many parents.

I suggested putting a list of Australia trainers on the Read Australia site,
to help parents and teachers locate AU Phono-Graphix therapists with ease.
Many Read Australia web site visitors had contacted us for this
information stating that they were looking for Phono-Graphix trainers, and that the
search facility on the ReadAmerica.net web site was difficult to use.
I offered to place these listings in the new 'Read Australia Directory' without charge.
My goal was to help spread the word about PG as a way to
improve literacy achievement and not for financial gain.

I have been told, by email, that I can not state on the web site that I
am or will be offering workshops and training without submitting specific proposals.
It appears that royalties are to be paid for such workshops and that course content cannot involve
giving an overview or mention of other methods of teaching reading. Free workshops cannot apparently be
delivered to parents- only a 90 minute talk that has been designed by Carmen and Geoffrey.
I was told that legal action would be taken if references to Phono-Graphix therapy/ training was
not removed from the web site immediately.
Listing trainers on the Read Australia web site would also not be a possiblity.

As only endorsement and positive feedback has ever been offered with
regards to Phono-Graphix and I have not gained financially from the promotion
of this method I am still rather unclear as to where this miscommunication had occured.
Perhaps I have misunderstood her, or had missed something sent when I became certified online
regarding offering training in Phono-Graphix?
I have tried to go back into my membership account at Read America several times to see
if there is any documentation regarding this issue. I appear to have been
locked out of my account.

My goal is to help children learn to read.
To be frank, I don't mind what method is used as long as it meets the recommendations as
outlined in research and quality reports- eg The Rose Report, National Inquiry into the Teaching of
Reading etc. Often I have found that using certain elements of programs more effectively meet the needs of individual students, and I would hope that teachers remain open to new ideas at all times.
I want parents and teachers to be given the information they need, to enable more children to succeed.
This may mean sharing a variety of methods and ideas.
There are a range of excellent programs out there- Jolly Phonics, Sounds~Write, THRASS to name just a few.
Read Australia will be used as a FREE resource for parents and teachers.
I welcome useful information and links. I do not offer this for financial gain of any type.

If you find references to an intention to deliver Phono-Graphix training, linked with Read Australia, elsewhere
on the internet however please do let me know so I can ensure that these are removed.

In my eagerness to promote the work of Diane McGuiness- through Phono-Graphix - I had never
considered that the Carmen and Geoffrey McGuiness may have a different view of how the
information should be shared, or that my intentions to 'spread the word' would be questioned.
I had not considered that becoming a certified Phono-Graphix Therapist does not apparently
entitle that person to advertise their services within their own web site/s even though they may list,
and receive referrals, through the Read America site- or that when delivering training in PG no other methods
can be mentioned or external resources shared.
Perhaps the words 'therapist' and 'trainer' has completely different meanings - in
relation to Phono-Graphix?

In any case...and moving on... my intention, and the goal of the Read Australia site is simply to empower
parents and teachers, and ultimately to help be a part of raising standards in literacy.
By doing so we can also be a part of improving behaviour - not only among our
children but also the adult population.
To see research linking poor literacy achievement and criminal behaviour and understand why this
is so important to me, as The Child Listener, please click here.

Please visit www.ReadAmerica.net for information about Phono-Graphix as
'Read Australia' no longer provides this free information (sorry!)

Putting aside the above, let us move forwards and share experiences
and ideas in order to achieve this. There are lots of excellent programs and wonderful practitioners out there
- and Read Australia aim to share these with you.

Emma
and my wonderful son who is a fabulous reader:-)

If you have any questions please email me

Update:
thank you so much for your recent emails and support- misunderstandings
do occur, and all we can do is learn from them.

To be clear, I continue to recommend that parents and teachers review all
options available to them, and that this means also finding out about Phono-Graphix even though
they are no longer able to do so through Read Australia.
Any misunderstanding or miscommunication I have had personally with the creators of
Phono-Graphix does not affect this.

Read Australia aims to share free information relating to a variety of teaching methods, so
that you - our 'Read Australia' web site visitors- can make more informed choices.

Keep reading! Em:-)
