Jolly Phonics Training Delivered by
Jolly (Literacy) Solutions- on the Gold Coast QLD

Jolly Phonics is introduced and resources explained - also
visit this page
for info
Jolly Phonics is a program where parents and teachers are able to teach children synthetic phonics
explicitly - therefore ensuring that all children are reading and spelling quickly and with confidence.

Everything we teach is based on research and clinical findings - although Emma, your tutor,
(and the only Jolly Phonics Accredited Trainer in QLD) has almost 20 years
of practical experience and can give you all sorts of useful info.

She will talk through ways to quickly assess your children so you know in which areas they are
currently, or likely to experience difficulties etc.

This is only a short workshop but Emma will send you away with lots of
info, and links to where find more info eg how to make or buy resources etc
It is suitable for parents as well as teachers.

Emma emigrated from the UK where she was an Inspector of Childcare and Early Years Education
for the UK Government - and has been teaching children under 5 as well as primary aged children,
for many years She has been really surprised by NAPLAN results within QLD -the worst state for year 3 and 5
reading scores- these results show we have a long way to go if we are to meet the needs of all children.
Sharing books etc is great- but parents need to be helping children more practively and effectively
- helping them to develop verbal intelligence and especially to identify sounds in spoken words.
Parents need to be able to help children learn the symbols that are used to represent those sounds
and recognise them within the environment and use them within everyday activities. Parents need to
understand that reading and spelling starts from language-so  children 'hearing'
sounds in words is where we need to start. Learning the pictures that represent those sounds on paper
is logical to children when done from the 'bottom up' and Jolly Phonics is a fun way to do this using
a multisensory approach and can be used at home to support what is happening in the classroom.
Many adults have forgotten what it's like to be a beginning reader and don't start with what children know
- for example they may teach them the letter names - asking them 'what sound does this make' etc
- which can be really confusing to some children. Many focus on the letter names which are far less important
than the sounds they represent- especially for thos ehow will struggle. This will be discussed.
Please bring 'readers' from your child's school as we will discuss the impact these will have on
your child's achievement and self-confidence.
Emma will talk you through why its important that children are given readers that they can actually de-code
- as well as books they can share with you- and will tell you where to get them!
Parents also need to understand how important it is not to teach children to guess or memorise- eg
by learning sight words- and how to know if the children are really de-coding.
This intensive workshop includes all of the above- and more!- and is sure you get you talking and
wanting to learn more!

Introducing your pre-school (or Prep) aged child
to the magical world of reading and spelling.

Parents will discover how easy it is to teach
children alphabet 'sounds' (pictures used to represent letters)
and how to blend and segment to develop an early
understanding of reading and spelling!
If you understand why some children fail to read quickly you can put in place activities to prevent this- starting
as soon as they begin to speak!

Emma will teach you how to teach your child to build words (spelling) and also break them down (reading)
alongside their individual natural language development. This will ensure they feel happy
and confident in their ability to read and spell even before they start school. Instilling a desire to
learn and the skills to do their personal best is one of the main strands of our workshops and something we
encourage you to proactively develop as early as possible.
A brief overview of Jolly Phonics is given within this workshop
